College Football Free Picks From Afar: Week 1

With the upcoming college football season sneaking up on us we thought we’d getting acquainted with some of the Week 1 betting action and offer up a few free college football picks. Take them for what they’re worth.

Boise State (+7.5 at 5Dimes) at Michigan State

The Broncos continue their tradition of taking on anybody, anywhere with a trip to East Lansing for a game with the Spartans.

Last year Boise State opened its season by beating Georgia in Atlanta; the year before the Broncos knocked off Virginia Tech opening weekend; and the year previous they beat Oregon.

This season, though, BSU must replace 14 starters, including at quarterback and nine on defense.

Michigan State, meanwhile, returns 13 starters from the team that lost the Big Ten championship game last year. But the Spartans also have to replace their starting QB.

MSU might have the edge in talent for this game, but how can we go against Boise State? We’ll take the points on this one.

Clemson (-4 at 5Dimes) at Auburn

In what should be a good inter-conference bout matching Tigers from the ACC and the SEC, Clemson and Auburn hook up at the Georgia Dome in Atlanta.

Clemson returns seven starters on both sides of the ball, including starting QB Tajh Boyd (33 TD passes last year) and RB Andre Ellington (1,178 rushing yards LY), from the team that won the ACC championship game last season.

Auburn, meanwhile, gets 15 starters back, including nine on defense, from a team that went 8-5 last year. But these Tigers have to replace both their starting QB and leading rusher.

With their returning offensive firepower we’re leaning toward Clemson minus the points for this game.

Michigan (+11 at 5Dimes) at Alabama

Finally, in the premier matchup of opening weekend, the Michigan Wolverines begin their second season under Coach Hoke with a trip to Arlington to take on the defending national champion Alabama Crimson Tide at Cowboys Stadium.

Big Blue returns 13 starters from the team that went a surprising 11-2 last year, led by Heisman candidate QB Denard Robinson.

‘Bama, on the other hand, only gets back 11 starters from its championship team of a season ago. But with the Tide it’s simply a matter of replacing great talent with new great talent, and they should find themselves in contention for the national championship again this year.

Alabama might be a monster again this season, but 11 points looks like a lot for this spot. So we’ll take Michigan plus those points.
